The Greatest Music Producer in the Known Universe

Apartment 3-G, April 1, 2011Tommie may be laying it on a little thick for a guy who isn't even in Wikipedia, but I guess Hobo Tramp Dan "The Man" Diller is in the League of Music Producers who Can't Make the Time to Shave (LMPCMTS, pronounced "lumpcamts"), along with his friend Rick Rubin, famous record producer and fellow scraggly beard haver.

But really, a world-famous producer? Let's see how he compares to his colleagues.

Left to right: Jeff Lynne, Quincy Jones, Dr. Dre, Dan DillerLooking good, Dan. Looking good.

Great, I Guess

I'm pretty sure the term "freaked" has been around since the 60s at least, so I don't see why Hobo Tramp Dan is so puzzled, unless he's been asleep a lot longer than I thought. Or maybe he's just flustered since Aunt Iris ran away a left him to deal with Blaze.

The Whole Story

Actually, Dan's leaving out the part where he fell asleep under a tree for twenty years; luckily, no one in Apartment 3-G uses computers, smart phones, bluetooth, ipods, ipads, email, the internet, wikipedia, twitter, facebook, youtube, Tivo, DVDs, blu-rays, Playstations, Xboxs, or those fancy "hybrid" cars. So it hasn't really been a problem.

Excuse Me, Mr. Diller

I like how Aunt Iris doesn't even bat an eye. "Hi, Blaze! How's the show going so far? I wanted to introduce you to this homeless man you seem to know already!" We're gearing up for the big reveal, the one we've been anticipating for over ten days now. Will Hobo Tramp Dan be a billionaire, or merely a millionaire?

Too Late Now!

I really want to hear Tommie's new songs. I really really want to hear Tommie's new songs. They're probably about love and loneliness, but what if she writes a rock opera?? What if she writes a rock opera based on Tazer Lady?? I can only hope Margaret Shulock and Frank Bolle have the common sense to put something together and release it on iTunes. Music doesn't have to be good to be popular!

Everything Changes

It changed everything... my claw-like grip on inanimate objects, the way lips connect far beyond the crease of my mouth... everything. I think it even changed your hairstyle for a minute there, Iris.

A Star is Born

I certainly didn't recognize Blaze without his trademark neckerchief/ascot. Maybe the play is Oklahoma or Annie Get Your Gun, and it's part of his costume. Perhaps this is the start of a blazing love affair for Tommie. Why would Tommie be mad at Blaze? Because he allowed for Tommie to be publicly humiliated at rehearsal? Tommie should be used to public humiliation, based on her previous wardrobe consisting entirely of sweatpants.

I wonder if this makeover/star turn is going to go right to Tommie's head? It will be a short, meteoric rise to the top followed by a horrifying downfall of bad men and booze. It's a cautionary tale.

Why Me, Sis?

Keep in under your ascot, buckaroo.Blaze Powers, a fashion legend in his own mind, couldn't imagine why I Dressed in the Dark wanted to get in contact with him, but Ruby swiftly invented a suitable cover-up.

Dream Job

Tommie vows to let out her inner wild and crazy redhead!Wanted: piano player for some sort of play I guess
Experience required: you have to be roughly as good as my sister
Hours: sporadic, if we get backing
Salary: wish I could pay you more

I'll take it! Ah... there goes 3G's most stable income. Oh well! This should be fun, and I think their apartment must be subsidized anyway.

Happy birthday Casey! This time on the right day. I was pretty close though, and you know I have a weird thing about flipping numbers.

Sweet Aunt Blaze

Does Blaze look super matronly in today's strip, or is it just me? This only fuels my desire to see Blaze and Tommie get together. Would A3G be the first mainstream comic strip to feature a lesbian couple? I mean, this is New York City, let's start acting like it. Tommie, please quit your job at the hospital, become a part of the theater scene, go Bohemian chic, and kiss some girls. Or guys! Whatever, just get interesting!

P.S. Sweet Aunt Blaze DEFINITELY sounds like I'm talking about marijuana.

Whadyaknow, Whadyasay?

Sometimes I say, 'About what?' Okay, so we didn't get to see Tommie play the piano at all, or see how exactly Blaze is involved in this show, or see what he show is about or what it's called or who the backers are or anything. But I think we can be just as satified to hear the Tommie did a nice job and have that be the end of it. Hmm? Eh? Team? Am I right?

Bless You, Tommie Thompson

Well-rounded is like a synonym for boring. And so the cycle of "Tommie acknowledges her boring existence" "Tommie starts hanging out with the theater crowd for kicks" and "Tommie gets distracted and stops hanging out with them" starts anew! This time, I hope there are elaborate costume changes.

Happy birthday Casey! 25/2010. I'm gonna make shirts one of these days.

Occupational Hijinks

I'll look like an amateur! Which I'm not, by the way. Whoa... Blaze. Look. I never pretended to know what you did for a living. Rodeo riding was probably my best guest, but you could've been a rodeo clown, or some kind of Old West reenactor, or... a grocery clerk I guess. In any case, it turns out you're some kind of theatrical producer? Or playwright? Or actor? I don't know, but where is this all coming from? This is more out of left field than even the Professor's turning out to be a licensed therapist. Which by the way, I still don't think he is.

Well Tommie, I hope you can play piano, because I want to see this guy in action.

By the way, reader phoebes-in-santa fe mentioned that Blaze looks like Jon Voight in Midnight Cowboy. I never saw that movie, so I had to look it up.

I hope my play doesn't go bottom up!
Hahaha! An uncanny resemblance, though I can't say for sure who wears the ascot better.

Blazin' Back Onto the Scene

Tommie is looking particularly Star Trek today.ALL RIGHT! Blaze is back! Oh man. This is exactly what this strip needs right now. Blaze is great for many reasons, most of which involve his kerchief. It makes him so easy to identify, plus it distinguishes him as an outsider, much like Ruby's bows. I wonder what Lu Ann's other cousins would wear to identify themselves... Hey Blaze! You might have more luck finding a piano player with craigslist than knocking on doors.

Sunday Recap

Okay, so I slacked off this Sunday. I thought, oh, Apartment 3-G always does a kind of cheapo recap, I can afford to leave the laptop off and take several naps instead. HOW WRONG I WAS. I missed so much!

Are you ready to think? First, I missed Margo not meeting the Dalai Lama! I guess that wasn't exciting enough for us to see. Probably a lot of handshaking and smiling, blah blah blah. Instead, we skip right to the action: the hotel room conversation about thinking about going home!

Oh, uh, yeah! I missed her too. THEN I missed the reappearance of Ruby and the Professor. The Prof looks pretty surprised in the second panel when Ruby says how much she's missed Lu Ann... I'd be surprised too.

I'll miss you too, Lucky! Cody, not so much. And finally, I missed some guy who isn't Blaze but does wear a kerchief try to hurry Lu Ann along to the airport. Come ON, Lu Ann! You don't want to miss that flight! Wait... were they riding the fence line?!
